On the campaign trail: week one. Durante a campanha: uma semana. Na szlaku kampanii: jeden tydzień

OUR postal polling cards were delivered from the District Council this week, proof if any were needed that a General Election is on the way.

I'm old fashioned enough to believe there should be no election activities on Good Friday. The number of Brits who keep the day sacred is, regrettably, dwindling year by year and I wonder if today's children realise the significance of the momentous event which this Holy Day commemorates.

In printing and publishing, Maunday Thursday - the day before Good Friday - was the wayzgoose, when management would pay their staff to take part in fun and games, with a family picnic to round off the day's activities. Wayzgoose was the traditional way to reward staff for having to work on Good Friday to prepare newspapers for the Easter Saturday editions, when everyone else in the kingdom except the emergency services workers would be relaxing at home. There were no national or local newspapers published on Good Friday, thus making Maunday Thursday a day when staff could all take the day off.

Today, newspapers are published Good Friday and every other day except Christmas Day - but of course, staff have to work on Christmas Day to publish a Boxing Day edition.

All this background information is my way of regretting that the unprecedented Leaders' Debate in Salford was held on Maunday Thursday, because the ramifications are being felt on Good Friday. For instance, Government Chief Whip Michael Gove was dragged out of bed to stand in the Salford rain this morning to talk about the impact of the two-hour debate on the voting public when he should have been at home with his wife and chilldren.

The debate has galvanised the election campaign, which of course was the intention. Watching, I was impressed with the Scottish National Party's Nicola Sturgeon but of the five people who are fighting the election across the whole of the UK - David Cameron, Nick Clegg, David Miliband, Nigel Farage and Natalie Bennett  -Cameron was by far the most effective.

Yes, I know, I would say that wouldn't I but the other four at times struggled. Clegg was in denial over his role in the coalition during the past five years, Farage was lucid but ineffective, Bennett gew in confidence as the evening progress, and Miliband thrashed around and was unable to land any effective debating punch.

The debate confirmed what we already knew: the choice at this election is between the competence of a Conservative government or the chaos of Ed Miliband propped up by the SNP.

Time and time again, Nicola Sturgeon showed how the Scottish Nationalists would dominate Miliband - an increasingly weak Labour leader whose only hope of entering Downing Street is by being cajoled by the SNP..

In contrast,  Cameron was able to build on the Conservatives' campaign there - we are building a strong economy so we can secure the future of everyone in our country - whether that's by investing in our NHS, giving our children a good education or looking after the elderly in our society.

And we have to keep on working through the plan and not go back to more debt, more taxes and more waste - all the things that got us into a mess to start with.

In Suffolk Coastal campaigning has started low key. Therese Coffey, elected in 2010 as the first ever woman MP in the county, has been zipping around this long, sprawling constituency from Southwold in the north to Felixstowe. She's also been campaigning in the neighbouring constituencies of Ipswich and Waveney, which the Conservatives have to hold to have any chance of forming a majority government.

May 7 is also polling day for district and parish councils. I've been out on the doorstep this week in Felixstowe West. Apart from one unpleasant individual in Aldringham Mews, who used the sort of foul language Channel 4 likes to spray about after the watershed,  the reception for the Conservatives has been positive. Labour and the Liberal Democrats are out distributing leaflets, but where are UKIP hiding? Farage talks a good talk, but it seems his volunteer supporters are not too keen on wearing out their shoe leather.

 Durante a campanha: uma semana

Sexta-feira, 3 abril, 2015

W druku i publikacji, Wielki Czwartek - dzień przed Wielki Piątek - był wayzgoose, gdy kierownictwo będzie płacić swoim pracownikom, aby wziąć udział w grach i zabawach, z piknikiem rodzinnym zaokrąglić wrażeń dzień.
